Applications of MBR

MBR membrane technology has become one of the new technologies for wastewater treatment and reuse with its clean, clear and stable water quality. It has achieved good removal effect for COD, NH3-N, SS, turbidity, etc. of various high concentration organic wastewater and refractory wastewater. MBR membrane is also applied to domestic wastewater and industrial wastewater treatment.

MBR membrane has been mainly used in the following fields:

  • Urban sewage treatment and building reclaimed water reuse

In 1967, the wastewater treatment plant adopting MBR process was built by Dorr Oliver Company of the United States, and the plant treated 14m ³/ D Wastewater. In 1977, a set of sewage reuse system was applied in a high-rise building in Japan. In 1980, Japan built two buildings with a processing capacity of 10m ³/ D and 50m ³/ D. In the mid-1990s, there were 39 such plants in operation in Japan, with a processing capacity of 500m ³/ d. And more than 100 high-rise buildings use MBR to treat sewage and reuse it in the middle water channel.

  • Industrial wastewater treatment

In addition to reclaimed water reuse and fecal sewage treatment, the application of MBR in industrial wastewater treatment has also received extensive attention. For example, the wastewater from food industry, aquatic processing, aquaculture, cosmetics production, dye and petrochemical industries has been treated with good results. In the early 1990s, the United States built an MBR system in Ohio to treat the industrial wastewater of an automobile factory, with a treatment scale of 151m ³/ d. The organic load of the system reaches 6.3kgCOD/m ³· d. The removal rate of COD is 94%, and most oil and grease are degraded. In the Netherlands, a fat extraction and processing plant uses the traditional oxidation ditch wastewater treatment technology to treat its production wastewater. Due to the expansion of production scale, sludge bulks and it is difficult to separate sludge. Zenon membrane modules are used to replace the sedimentation tank, with good operation results.

  • Purification of slightly polluted drinking water

With the wide application of nitrogen fertilizer and pesticides in agriculture, drinking water is also polluted to varying degrees. LyonnaisedesEaux developed an MBR process with biological denitrification, pesticide adsorption and turbidity removal functions in the mid-1990s. In 1995, the company built a daily drinking water production of 400m in Douchy, France ³ The factory of.

  • Fecal sewage treatment

The content of organic matter in fecal sewage is very high. The traditional denitrification treatment method requires high sludge concentration, and the solid-liquid separation is unstable, which affects the tertiary treatment effect. The appearance of MBR membrane solved this problem well, and made it possible to directly treat the fecal sewage without dilution.

  • Landfill/fertilizer leachate treatment

Landfill/compost leachate contains high concentrations of pollutants, and its water quality and quantity vary with climate conditions and operating conditions. MBR membrane technology has been used by many sewage treatment plants for the treatment of this kind of sewage before 1994. The combination of MBR membrane technology and RO technology can not only remove SS, organics and nitrogen, but also effectively remove salts and heavy metals.
