How to treat high salt wastewater

There are two methods for treating high salinity wastewater:
  • One is the Membrane Method. For high salinity wastewater treatment methods, the membrane treatment method can achieve a high desalination rate, usually above 95%.
  • The other one is the Distillation Desalination Method.Distillation method is the earliest desalination method adopted, there are many distillation methods, such as multi effect evaporation, multi-stage flash distillation, compressed air distillation, membrane distillation, etc.

Distillation Desalination

Distillation is the oldest and most commonly used desalination method. At present, the distillation desalination technology for industrial wastewater is basically developed based on seawater desalination technology.

Distillation is the process of heating saltwater to boil and evaporate, and then condensing the steam into fresh water. Distillation method is the earliest desalination method adopted, which has the advantages of simple structure, easy operation, and good quality of fresh water obtained.

Multi Effect Evaporation

Multi effect evaporation refers to the evaporation of heated brine in multiple series evaporators, where the steam evaporated from the previous evaporator serves as a heat source for the next evaporator and condenses into fresh water.

Multi-stage Flash Evaporation

Taking seawater desalination as an example, the raw seawater is heated to a certain temperature and then introduced into the flash chamber. Due to the pressure control in the flash chamber being lower than the saturated vapor pressure corresponding to the temperature of the hot brine, the hot brine enters the flash chamber and becomes superheated water, which rapidly partially gasifies, thereby reducing the temperature of the hot brine itself. The generated steam condenses and becomes the required fresh water.

Multi stage flash evaporation is based on this principle, allowing hot brine to flow through several flash chambers with gradually decreasing pressure, gradually evaporating and cooling. At the same time, the brine also gradually thickens until its temperature is close to (but higher than) the natural seawater temperature.

Steam Compression Condensation

The steam compression condensation desalination technology is to preheat salt water, enter the evaporator, and partially evaporate inside the evaporator. The generated secondary steam is compressed by the compressor to increase pressure and then introduced to the heating side of the evaporator. After condensation, the steam is extracted as product water, thus achieving the recycling and utilization of heat energy.

When used as a desalination and recovery process for circulating cooling water, it can concentrate and discharge harmful components in the cooling water, and recover over 95% of the sewage water in the form of condensate, which is returned to the system as circulating water and boiler make-up water.
