Beer Processing Wastewater

Source of Wastewater

Beer wastewater mainly comes from malt workshop (wheat soaking wastewater), saccharification workshop (saccharification, filtration and washing wastewater), fermentation workshop (fermentation tank washing, filtration and washing wastewater), filling workshop (bottle washing, sterilization wastewater and beer from broken bottles) and production cooling wastewater.

Features of Wastewater

The wastewater from beer industry mainly contains organic substances such as sugars and alcohols. The concentration of organic substances is high, and although non-toxic, it is easy to corrupt. It will consume a large amount of dissolved oxygen when discharged into the water body, causing serious harm to the water environment.

The water quality and quantity vary in different seasons, and the content of organic matter is also at the peak at the peak flow.

In domestic brewery wastewater, the CODcr content is 1000~2500mg/L, and the BOD5 content is 600~1500mg/L. The wastewater has high biodegradability and contains a certain amount of Kjeldahl nitrogen and phosphorus.

Treatment Process Selection of Wastewater

At present, most breweries mainly use the traditional biochemical method to treat wastewater, and many new breweries use the combined process to treat wastewater. The combined process can save costs and reduce energy consumption.

Anaerobic-Oxic Combined Process

The process of treating brewery wastewater in series with IC Reactor and Aeration Tank has high stability, small floor area, high degree of operation automation, and can save costs.

The excess granular sludge formed in the IC reactor can be sold. The COD value of the treated wastewater is 30mg/L~45mg/L, and the removal rate is about 86%. The average concentration of SS in the effluent is 40mg/L~45mg/L, and the average removal rate can reach more than 95%, which can be used for irrigation and greening.

Anaerobic-Anoxic-Oxic Combined Process

Using this process to treat high concentration brewery wastewater has the following advantages: it has a wider range of adaptability to wastewater quality than a single treatment process, can shorten the HRT of wastewater, prevent sludge bulking, high degradation rate of organic matter, and good sedimentation performance of sludge.

A series process of Hydrolytic Acidification-sequencing Batch Activated Sludge (SBR) - Biological Adsorption (Aeration) was used to treat brewery wastewater, which is a typical anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic combination process.

Hydrolytic acidification tank can reduce the pH value of wastewater and remove part of COD, improve the biodegradability, aeration tank can reduce the concentration of BOD, reduce the load of subsequent treatment, biosorption can remove about 50% of organic matter in a relatively short aeration time, effluent COD and BOD are stable, and the removal rate is 98.6% and 93.8% respectively. The whole treatment system has simple process, compact structure, short HRT, and saves energy consumption and cost.

In addition, the commonly used combined processes also include: hydrolytic acidification-biological contact oxidation, UASB and oxidation ditch series process, UASB anoxic tank-contact oxidation process, hydrolytic acidification-biological contact oxidation - external circulation (EC) anaerobic process.
